F.A.Q.
1) What type of fibers do you use in your ilfilorosso yarns?
ilfilorosso carries mainly yarns made from wool and cotton. Each fiber type has its own qualities, and they are often mixed to take advantage of the best properties of each one. Read here to know more about our yarn (link alla pagina con dati)
Ilfilorosso goal is to use natural fibers which for now are wool and cotton. Each type of fiber has its own characteristics and are often mixed or intertwined to take advantage of the best properties of each. Read here to learn more about our yarns.
2) Which category standards do you refer to for your yarns?
To categorise our yarns we followed the standards of the Craft Yarn Council.
3) What does extrafine mean?
The adjective “extrafine” means that the fibres of our wool are about 19,5 micron. This makes our merino wool perfect for sensitive skins!
Obviously everyone’s nerve endings are different, so stimulations can get different responses. But in general, more the diameter of the fibre is greater, than more itchy they became: they press against skin and irritate nerve endings, because they don’t bend.
The fibres of our merino wool are so thin that the skin doesn’t feel their touch. Extrafine merino wool’s use is rapidly gaining popularity, even in next-to-skin clothing. So, there are many reasons to try our selection of yarns: you will enjoy softness, warmth and comfort!
4) Why unshrinkable is better than superwash?
ilfilorosso wool is unshrinkable: this means that you can wash your garment also in the washing machine, with a wool (or gentle) cycle, being sure that this characteristic prevents the natural fibre from felting.
We prefer not to use superwash treatments because it’s a chemical treatment that affects some of the beautiful characteristics of the wool: it has less memory so it tends to lose its shape more easely; it can be slippery on metal needles; it doesn’t bloom like non-superwash wool (by the way, if you work with our wool, and especially if if purchase it in cones, you will see how much it bulks up after washing!) and, last but not least, it doesn’t have the comfort and the warmth which are typical of the natural wool.
So, our choice is: unshrinkable!
5) Skeins or cones?
Making your order, for most of our products you can choose if you want them on skeins or cones.
Consider that on cones we try to do our best to have continuous yarn, so if you have to make a project with long yarn need, like for example a sweater, you can choose cone, but consider that on this support the yarn stays tight so it seems more thin. In this case, a previous swatch is recommended: wash it (even only with water, never with fabric softener!) or vaporise it, and the next day you will see how it amazingly bulks up! In this way, you will know how the yarn behaves and continue your work with this awareness.
If you choose skeins, you already will see the yarn already vaporised several times, so it will be more airy and ready to be used!
6) What does “Oeko-Tex® certified” means?
The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 is a globally uniform testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production. The test for harmful substances comprise substances which are prohibited or regulated by law, chemicals which are known to be harmful to health, and parameters which are included as a precautionary measure to safeguard health.
